Google Places Basic Information - Seattle Web Promotion

This is an excerpt from Google's Places Help Page, it gives an general overview of what information you need to provide for your business listing on Google Places.

http://www.google.com/support/places/bin/static.py?page=guide.cs&guide=28247&topic=28307

Create a great listing

Take a tour of a Place page to understand how information appears in our search results

Basic information
When you enter basic information about your business, make sure you include the following:

  • Company/Organization: This is the business name known in the offline world.
  • Address: Enter your address the same way it would appear on a paper mail envelope.
  • Phone number: Make sure to include the area code with your business phone number.
  • Website: Make sure to list your authoritative business website as your homepage, since Google uses information from your homepage to help improve search results. The URL you provide can be a maximum of 255 characters.
  • Description: Tell users what makes your business special.
  • Email address: Let users know how to contact you.
Categories
Categories are ways to classify your business that help Google show your business for the right searches. The Google Places will suggest categories that match what you type, but feel free to create your own if you don't see a category that fits your business. Make sure that the categories you choose are accurate and describe your business well. It's ok if they're specific; Google's search algorithm makes sure that users looking for a general business type, like 'book stores,' will see businesses in more specific categories too.

Hours of operation
Let customers know when your business is open.

Payment options
Specify the payment types you accept.

Photos/Videos
Including photos and video adds visual appeal to your listing.

Learn even more ways Google products work together.

How To Disable Google’s Personalization Of Search ResultsTurning off search history personalization

How To Disable Google’s Personalization Of Search Results
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/disable-googles-personalization-search-results/

It’s never been a secret that Google uses your personal information (web history and browser data) by default to personalize your search results. Basically what it means is that what you see for some Google searches is (slightly) different from what other people see for the same searches.
You may like the feature (but want to switch it off for some searches) or you may want to disable it completely – it’s up to you and your purposes.

4 Elements of a Successful Business Web Presence
http://mashable.com/2010/02/10/business-web-presence/
The Website
With our goals in mind, we can begin to explore specific elements of a strong website.
The Blog
For some reason, many business owners shy away from blogs. What they don’t realize is that most business “News” sections are blogs. “Blog” simply defines any continually updated news or content section of a site. In fact, this is technically a post on a blog.
The Newsletter
There are a number of services you can use such as MailChimp and ConstantContact; it simply depends on what you want. Do your research and choose a program you like. The newsletter cost quickly pays for itself. Email marketing is one of the most effective ways to generate sales.
Social Media Accounts
Another option for capturing leads is social media. Microblogs and social networks such as Facebook and Twitter can help you connect with and contact those within your core community. For this strategy to work, your blog should serve as a central hub. The hub sends consumers to your respective social media profiles to build the connection.

A Web Presence Without a Website - WSJ.com  MAY 8, 2011
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703859304576309791299294436.html

When Leslie Richin launched a public-relations business after getting laid off in 2009, her first instinct was to invest in a company website. But hiring a professional to build one for her wasn't in the budget.

So Ms. Richin, 32 years old, set up free profiles on LinkedIn.com and Twitter.com. She created a free online business card using a service called DooID.com. And she launched a blog, spending roughly $50 on a decorative template, though she could've gotten a generic one for free.
<SNIP>
"When people get a referral to a business, what's the first thing they do? They go look for it online," says Bruce Freeman, an adjunct professor of entrepreneurship at Seton Hall University's Stillman School of Business in South Orange, N.J. "You need to be online."

Online Alternatives
For little or no cost, you could put your start-up on a third-party site. Some options:

  • Business directories: Yelp.com, Manta.com, YellowPages.com
  • Blog-hosting sites: WordPress.com, Tumblr.com, Blogger.com
  • Marketplaces: Etsy.com, eBay.com, Overstock.com
  • Content-hosting sites: Flavors.me, Weebly.com, Carbonmade.com, OtherPeoplesPixels.com
  • Social-media sites: Facebook.com, Twitter.com, LinkedIn.com

The 20 Most Expensive Google AdWords — And How to Compete Against Them | BNET
So what are the most searched, most expensive Google AdWords?
Winning the auction for the top slot for in-demand keywords can be incredibly expensive. For example, at the time the list was created (bidding is a dynamic and ongoing process) the top spot for “insurance” cost over $54 per click. “Mortgage” and “attorney” both cost over $47 per click for the top slot, and the most expensive keyword in the “cord blood” category cost over $27 per click.

Web Presence is Simple - Local Web Promotion not so much

People are looking for you and your business on the internet.
70% of US households use the Internet as an information source when shopping locally for products and services. (Kelsey Group)   Product research and comparison shopping happens online, but 67% of those purchases happen offline. (Accenture)
43% of all searches on Google include a geographical identifier (city, town or zip code).
86% of those people followed up with a phone call.
61% of those people ended up making a purchase offline.
25% of all commercial Internet searches are conducted by users looking for local merchants. (Kelsey Group)

People EXPECT you and your business to be on the internet.
For the first time in history, the majority of consumers are using the Internet rather than the phone book to find local products and services.
And local search is an area where local businesses can compete on a level playing field with larger name brands.

Old paper advertising mediums simply do not have the capacity to display the features and content that every local business owner should be using…
  *  Links to your website, ecommerce page or blog
  *  Up to 10 pictures of your business
  *  Videos of your business, products or services
  *  Downloadable special offer coupons
  *  A map with directions to your business

Most of these internet local listings are free
All that is required is basic business info, hours, tagline, logo, photo and some time.

   Web Presence is Simple
A free websote?  Just something for the business card?

A free blog?  Just to demonstrate your digital presence?

Check out ScribeFire to help with your blog posting.

Claim your Google Places Business Listing.
Create your Google Personal Profile.
Create a Google Blogspot blog.
Create a Google Sites website.
Open a Google Analytics Account to track your websites and blogs.
Open a Google Picasa account for storing photos used on your sites.
A Google Youtube channel can store your videos.
An iGoogle portal can show your other site's RSS feeds.
A Wordpress blog would be useful.
A Posterous blog will take your email sent to it and put it on all your blogs.
Tumblr blogs have their adherents.
A YELP Business page is crucial for some businesses.
Bing Business Portal will give you a Business page for free.
Yahoo has a business center as well.
A GoGoPin business website can do tricks with your FaceBook Page.
And of course Biznik, LinkedIn, Yellowpages, Superpages and other local linstings.

Top 12 SEO Tips for 2008
It drives me nuts when I come across an article, or even worse spend good money on going to a conference and someone spends an hour of my time telling me about their company or what their company can do to make me #1, when what I came for was some in-depth knowledge or recommendations, or even just an idea or two that I hadn't thought of to improve my SEO knowledge. I'll bet you have been there too, eh?
Even worse is spending time in the wrong forum and getting bad advice or propaganda-led guesses.

How a Shoestring Staff With a Minuscule Budget Turned Mondays Meatless

And the amazing part is that all this happened with zero advertising, no fancy PR firm and a shoestring staff.

Build a presence online: Although this concept is obvious these days, it’s still not easy to do. In January 2009, there was just one blogger who was regularly touting meatless recipes on Mondays. Today there are more than 150, including the Food Network’s Dish blog. Elam, who — full disclosure — is a friend, says he engaged bloggers by highlighting them on Meatless Monday’s site with a wall of fame.

Introduction to Google Sites

Google Sites makes it easy for anyone to create and manage simple, secure group websites. Getting started is easy, and there are a number of helpful templates. More than just a visual theme, site templates can include site structure and navigation, custom page templates, embedded gadgets, and more. Google Sites is powerful enough for a company intranet, yet simple enough for a family website.

Local SEO 101: Increase the Odds of a Plus-Box Map

by Silver

You’ve likely seen Plus-Boxes in Google search results. They are little boxes which sometimes appear below a search result listing, and when clicked they expand the listing, allowing more info to be displayed, such as a small map or a stock chart.

http://www.nodalbits.com/bits/thoughts-on-local-search-ranking-factors/

<SNIP>

If you are a newbie at local marketing, or a busy small business owner, the portions of the study which you ought to pay closest attention to include: factors which we deemed the “most positive” or “most important”; and the factors which we considered “most harmful”.

If you have limited time and resources to do everything that’s potentially beneficial for your Google Places (and Yahoo! and Bing) listing and website, then just start out with the stuff we considered the most-positive while avoiding doing things we agreed were most-harmful. For Google Places listings, you should definitely read Google’s quality guidelines carefully and perhaps look over Mike Blumenthal’s chart of Google Places guidelines which were updated near the end of 2009. Drifting over into breaking one of Google’s rules can definitely impair your ranking ability!

Local Web Promotion Introduction

Local Web Promotion Introduction

Theory Put To a Test
On May 3rd I started helping a friend with a new website and the local web promotion for the site.
Ron Wilson registered the GlassEnergyElectronics.com domain. It is hosted by Powweb.com.
We started with a Gmail account and found that glassenergyelectronics@gmail.com was available.

Claimed a Google Business Profile Google Places.

Next was a Google Blog

Created Google Website
Glass Energy Google Site

A Wordpress Blog at wordpress.com was next

Another Wordpress Blog was installed on the website

Drupal was installed on the website
Drupal on GlassEnergyElectronics.com

Google Analytics Account setup

Bing Business Profile setup

Created WIX website
Glass Energy WIX site

YellowPages entry created
GlassEnergy on YellowPages

Is all this necessary?
I am unsure. I know that some sites that allow you to create a blog are preferred by search engines.
This can be tested by posting a blogpost with an unusual word.
The post will turn up in a Google Search as soon as 24 hours.
WordPress.com and Blogger.com are two of these preferred sites. Your blog will contain links to your other sites.
Links are the secondary goal, a web presence is primary.

Why do I need a new Gmail account?
Over time you find managing the business end of things from a separate email account is easier.
Gmail does a good job of blocking SPAM, especially when you are posting the email address on all of your sites.

Does all this even work?
Glass Energy Electronics did not exist until the second week of May 2011. Now (June 5th) when you do a Google for it, it has 7 or 8 of the links on the first page.
http://www.google.com/search?q=glass+enegy+electronics

How much do you charge to do this?
I am unsure. Although all the sites are free (some are simple with premium accounts that cost), the time involved can be surprising.
A wild guess? $200 for Basic, $400 for Intermediate, $600 for Advanced.
If you want to add SEO to the advanced, contact a SEO company.

What do I need to prepare for this?
